Bring student engagement and collaborative learning to your online classes with Always, Sometimes, Never Math.

In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of ASN math, and how to generate meaningful math discussions involving algebraic reasoning. You’ll also learn to use the digital tools (Google Slides, Google Meet) that will bring hands-on learning to your online classroom.

Enrollment in this workshop includes all the print and digital resources you’ll need to teach an interactive Always, Sometimes, Never lesson the very next day!

What is a Number Sentence?

Working with number sentences helps elementary students make sense of equations and inequalities. Instead of just trying to “get answers,” students reason about the meanings of equality, numbers, and operations.

In this workshop, you’ll learn to support your students in developing their mathematical reasoning. And you’ll learn specific activities and lessons that will enable you to use Always, Sometimes, Never math to teach a wide range of content standards.

Always sometimes never math challenges students to go beyond answer getting

Can Number Sentences Help my Elementary School Students?

Number sentence activities offer several benefits for elementary students.

For one, it works for many different standards, across grades levels. Especially Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA), Numbers in Base-10 (NBT), and Number as Fraction (NF).

In addition, Always, Sometimes, Never supports practice standards MP1 (Problem Solving), MP2 (Abstract Reasoning), and MP3 (Constructing Viable Arguments).

Besides its academic benefits, Always, Sometimes, Never Math is fun and interactive. You’ll challenge your students to learn creatively and collaboratively. And the lessons work well in-person or online.

Session Overviews

The workshop is divided into three parts: Do the ProofsDesign the Proofs, and Teach the Proofs

Session 1: Do the Proofs: You’ll engage in Always, Sometimes, Never Math as a student. You’ll learn to prove number sentences using calculation and reasoning. You’ll also get to experience the digital activities from the student side.

Session 2: Design the Proofs: Next, you’ll design your own number proofs, aligned to your grade-level standards.

Session 3: Teach the Proofs: Finally, we’ll plan an Always, Sometimes Never activity for your elementary classroom. You’ll learn how to plan a math workshop using tools that support interactive online learning (Google Meets, Docs, and Slides).
